Linocut for Beginners | How to Make a Stamp
How to Get Started With Linocut?
We started exploring the linocut technique by making a stamp. For this project, we chose a stamp-making set for simpler projects. You can use it to make, for example, a personalized stamp or bookplates. Plus, with an ink pad, you can get a result really quickly.

We chose the shape of the pad from the set that best suited our project. Since the surface is rubber, you can draw the design you want to carve with a pencil. This makes it easier to carve the right shape.
Tip: Remember that the image you want to print on paper should be reversed on the stamp.

After drawing the logo, we focused on carving out the parts that would be white on the paper. Probably the most important rule of the linocut technique is to carve with the gouge away from yourself, so you don’t injure your hands if the gouge slips. For the area we carved, two gouge sizes were more than enough. If you decide to use a larger piece of lino, though, it’s good to have several sizes and shapes on hand (like this set).

After carving out all the necessary areas and lines, we were left with a stamp ready to use. So we grabbed an ink pad, and look, the ARTMiE logo is ready!
Tip: Every artist develops their own way of carving and presenting their linocuts. We started with a thick blade, then used a thin one to refine the details.

Making a stamp is a great way to start exploring the linocut technique, especially when you discover that you can create interesting motifs even on small surfaces.
And if you enjoy working on a small scale, be sure to try larger surfaces too, where the possibilities are practically unlimited. This creative set can help, with larger linoleum, a roller, and various knives. Of course, we mustn’t forget multicolor printing, which requires printing ink. We’ll leave the choice of shades up to you. ;)

Exploring different techniques and possibilities in art is one of the things that makes our work meaningful. We hope you’ll join us on this adventurous journey full of art and creativity. :)
