Fabric markers draw directly on fabric, for lettering, outlines, and details. Most just need to be ironed on the reverse side once dry, then they can withstand washing inside out at up to 40 °C, and some at up to 60 °C. For dark fabric, choose opaque KREUL Opak markers; regular fabric markers are enough for light fabric, and Pebeo Setacolor markers are for leather.
Fabric Markers are the quickest way to decorate a T-shirt, bag, or sneakers without a brush. Below, you’ll find out which markers are suitable for dark or light fabric, how to heat-set them, and which ones kids can use.
Which Fabric Markers Should You Choose?
| What for | Typically | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Dark and light fabrics | opaque markers, round tip 2–4 mm | KREUL Opak medium · KREUL Black and White Set of 4 (two tips, refillable) · KREUL set |
| Light fabrics | colored markers, fine and broader tips | Nassau dual-ended markers, 12 pcs · JOVI Jovidecor 12 pcs (4.8 mm brush tip) · DARWI TEX fine markers, 3 ml (washable up to 60 °C) · KREUL fine · KREUL Javana Texi Max, Set of 5 |
| Outlines and lettering | black marker with a fine tip | KREUL Javana black (1–3 mm tip) · Marvy 122-S (no ironing required, resistant to water and chlorine) |
| Effects | glitter markers | KREUL glitter medium |
| Kids | broad tip, water-based | KREUL Fabric Markers for Kids · MUCKI Stars, Set of 5 · KREUL Junior, Set of 5 |
| Leather | markers with an extra-fine tip | Pebeo Setacolor for leather (smooth leather, suede) |
| Pre-drawing a motif | disappearing marker | Disappearing marker (the mark disappears on its own in 1 to 14 days) |
For larger areas, use fabric paints; find the full process, from preparing the fabric, in the guide Painting on Fabric Step by Step.
How to heat-set fabric markers?
Wash the fabric without fabric softener before drawing, and place parchment paper between the layers to keep the paint from bleeding through. Once dry, iron the motif from the reverse side or through parchment paper, setting the temperature according to the fabric. Some fabric markers also set on their own in the air: KREUL fine after three days, black KREUL Javana after a few days; ironing makes them even more durable. Marvy 122-S does not need ironing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are fabric markers washable?
Yes, after heat-setting. For example, Nassau, KREUL Opak and JOVI Jovidecor can withstand washing at up to 40 °C, while DARWI TEX, KREUL fine and black KREUL Javana can withstand washing at up to 60 °C. Wash the T-shirt inside out.
Can fabric markers be used on a dark T-shirt?
Yes, but only opaque markers, such as KREUL Opak or the white marker from the KREUL Black and White set. Regular fabric markers are intended for light-colored fabric; for DARWI, the manufacturer recommends first underpainting dark fabric with light-colored fabric paint.
What fabrics are fabric markers suitable for?
Cotton, linen, batiste and blended fabrics. KREUL and DARWI markers are intended for fabrics with no more than 20 % synthetic fibers.
Are fabric markers suitable for kids?
For kids, there are KREUL fabric markers for kids (washable at up to 60 °C after heat-setting) and short MUCKI Stars markers, which fit comfortably in small hands. Leave the ironing for heat-setting to an adult.
What is the difference between a fabric marker and fabric paint?
Use a marker to draw precise lines, lettering and details without a brush. For larger areas and opaque coverage, fabric paint is a better choice. They are often used together: paint the area, then add the outlines with a marker.
