Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use thinners when oil painting?

Not necessarily. You can use oil paints straight from the tube (impasto) or thin them with oil. Thinners are useful for cleaning brushes and applying thin underpainting layers.

Turpentine or odorless thinner?

Both thin oil paints and clean brushes. Traditional turpentine is a distillate of pine resin with a strong smell. Odorless thinner, such as Kompozit Thinner, is suitable for people sensitive to odors. In between is citrus turpentine, which has a less unpleasant smell.

What is linseed oil used for in oil painting?

Linseed oil adjusts the consistency of oil paint just before painting, making it smoother and extending the time you can work with it. Walnut oil is better for light shades because it yellows less.

When should you varnish an oil painting?

Apply final varnish only when the painting is completely dry. Schmincke recommends waiting at least 8 to 12 months. Varnish protects the artwork from dust and dirt. Choose gloss or matte.

How can you speed up the drying of oil paints?

Mix fast-drying medium into the paint, or spray a siccative onto the wet layer. Thinner layers also dry faster.
