JESMONITE – an eco-friendly alternative to resin and concrete
Jesmonite is a British brand that developed a unique acrylic composite material, an eco-friendly alternative to epoxy resin and concrete. Jesmonite is water-based, nontoxic, and does not release harmful fumes. It's ideal for making trays, vases, candle holders, and decorative objects.
What is Jesmonite?
Jesmonite is a two-component material (liquid + powder) that cures into a stone- or concrete-like finish when mixed. It can be colored with pigments, given a marble effect, sanded, and varnished. The result looks like stone, but is lighter and more eco-friendly.

Frequently asked questions
What exactly is Jesmonite, and what is it used for?
Jesmonite is an eco-friendly composite material made from mineral powder and water-based acrylic resin. It's used for casting decorative objects such as trays, candle holders, vases, and jewelry. It's a safe alternative to toxic resins because it contains no solvents. Once cured, it's very strong, impact-resistant, and looks like stone or concrete.
How do I mix Jesmonite properly to avoid bubbles in my cast?
The key is to follow the precise weight ratio of the components specified by the manufacturer, usually 2.5 parts powder to 1 part liquid. Mix the ingredients slowly and thoroughly to avoid creating too many air bubbles. After pouring the mixture into a silicone mold, gently tap it against a surface several times to release trapped air and create a smooth surface without unwanted holes.
Can I add paints or other decorations to Jesmonite?
Yes, Jesmonite takes color well with special pigments made specifically for this material. You can also add glitter, dried flowers, pieces of crushed stone, or colored flakes to the mixture. These additions create a unique terrazzo effect. Take care not to add more than 5% pigment by total mixture weight, or the structure of the cast may be affected.
How long does Jesmonite take to cure, and when can I remove it from the mold?
Curing time depends on the size of the cast and the surrounding temperature. You can remove most small objects from the mold after just 30 to 60 minutes. However, the material reaches its maximum strength only after drying completely, which takes about 24 hours. After removing the piece from the mold, we recommend letting it cure on a level surface to prevent it from warping.
Do I need to treat a finished Jesmonite product?
Yes. Although Jesmonite is strong, it's porous and absorbent. To make it resistant to water, grease, or dirt, you need to treat it with a protective varnish or wax after it has dried completely. Use the original Jesmonite sealer to create an invisible barrier on the surface. This will make your product look better and help it stay in perfect condition longer.
