NERCHAU – German Hobby and Fabric Paints Since 1834

The NERCHAU brand dates back to 1834, when brothers Friedrich and Carl Hessel established a paint and pigment business in the Saxon town of Nerchau. By 1880, they employed more than 100 people. After German reunification in 1990, the brand was revived and is now part of the LUKAS/Daler-Rowney group.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Nerchau fabric paints different from other brands?

Nerchau fabric paints stand out for their high pigment concentration and excellent coverage on both light and dark fabrics. They are designed to keep fabric fibers soft and the paints resistant to washing after heat-setting with an iron. They offer a wide range of shades and excellent stability over long-term use.

How do I properly heat-set Nerchau fabric paints?

Once the painting is completely dry, usually after 24 hours, you need to heat-set the motif. Iron it from the reverse side or through parchment paper for three to five minutes at the temperature recommended for cotton. This process bonds the pigments to the fibers, helping your artwork withstand repeated machine washing at temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Can Nerchau paints be used on surfaces other than fabric?

Although Nerchau paints are primarily intended for fabric, their versatile formula also allows them to be applied to paper, cardboard, or wood. For hard, smooth surfaces, choose specialized acrylic paints, which adhere better to them and provide a more durable result.

How should I dilute Nerchau paints?

Nerchau paints are ready to use straight from the bottle. If you want to achieve a watercolor effect or a softer transition, you can dilute them with clean water, but by no more than 10 percent of the paint volume. Diluting them further may reduce the pigment's resistance and colorfastness on fabric after washing.

Are Nerchau glass paints suitable for beginners?

Yes, Nerchau glass paints are ideal for beginners thanks to their fluid consistency and practical applicator. They are self-leveling, which means that once applied to glass, they create a smooth, glossy surface without visible brush marks. Simply choose an outline to define the design, then fill the areas with your chosen shade.
