Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between fabric paints and silk paints?

Fabric paints from the PENTART brand are thicker and designed for cotton or linen, where they soak into the fibers. Silk paints are thin and fluid, and require PENTART resist outliner to prevent the paint from spreading across the delicate material. When painting on silk, it’s important to set the paint by ironing so the colorants bond permanently with the fibers and resist washing.

How do I use silk outliners correctly?

Apply PENTART outliner directly from the tube onto stretched silk. Create closed lines that act as a barrier for fluid paints. Once the outliner is completely dry, you can paint the areas inside the lines. For a professional look, make sure all lines connect without gaps. Otherwise, the paint will soak uncontrollably into the surrounding areas of the fabric.

Do I need special brushes for painting on fabric?

For fabric and silk, we recommend using brushes with soft synthetic bristles that don’t leave streaks. Round brushes with a sharp point are ideal for detailed work with PENTART or DP Craft outliners. Wash them immediately after use with lukewarm water, because once cured, dried fabric paint is water-resistant and could permanently ruin the brush.

How do I set a painting on fabric so it won’t wash out?

Once the PENTART paints are completely dry, iron the painting through parchment paper or a thin cotton cloth. Iron for at least five minutes on the cotton setting without steam. The heat activates the setting ingredients in the pigment, making the painting resistant to machine washing. We recommend washing garments inside out at up to forty degrees Celsius.

Can fabric paints and silk paints be mixed?

We don’t recommend mixing fabric paints and silk paints. Each type has a different composition and viscosity. If you mix thick fabric paint with thin silk paint, you’ll affect their ability to soak into the fibers correctly. It’s better to use complete sets from a single brand, such as PENTART, to ensure consistent shade intensity and the same setting method for your textile project.
