Primers and Varnishes – Protect, Prepare, and Perfect Your Work
Every work of art deserves proper protection and preparation. Primers and varnishes for artists are the unsung heroes of the creative process, from gesso that prepares the surface to mediums that change paint properties and finishing varnishes that protect completed paintings from UV rays, dust, and moisture.
What will you find in this category?
- Surface Primers – gesso, primers, and gesso for preparing canvas and wood
- Varnishes and Fixatives – protective varnishes for oil paintings, acrylics, and pastels
- Spray Paints and Markers – for quick application and details
- Outdoor Paints – weather-resistant paints for outdoor projects
- Gilding and Patinating – gold leaf, patinating pastes
Why are primers and varnishes important?
Proper surface preparation improves paint adhesion, extends the life of your work, and prevents yellowing and cracking. A finishing varnish protects paintings from UV rays, dust, and scratches, and gives the surface a gloss, matte, or satin finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to prime canvas before painting?
Most canvases at ARTMiE are already double-primed with gesso and ready to use. Gesso priming is only needed for canvas rolls or surfaces you prepare yourself.
What varnish should I use on an acrylic painting?
For acrylic paintings, we recommend acrylic varnish in a spray or brush-on varnish. Choose a gloss, matte, or satin finish depending on the effect you want to achieve.
When should I varnish an oil painting?
An oil painting should be completely dry before varnishing. This takes at least 6 months, ideally a year. In the meantime, you can protect it with retouch varnish.
