Acrylic paints are fast-drying, water-based paints that you can use on canvas, paper, wood, and stone. For painting on canvas, we most often recommend Kompozit ACRYL PRO ART or Solo Goya TRITON. For large areas and hobby use, choose economical 500–750 ml packs, and for professional work, paints by Schmincke, Golden, or Maimeri. If you’re just starting out, choose a set of acrylic paints.

Acrylic Paints for Painting, for Beginners, Students, and Professionals
At ARTMiE, you’ll find acrylic paints in every quality level, from economical paints for large areas and art classes to student paints and professional acrylics with a high pigment concentration. Acrylic paint can be thinned with water, dries within minutes, and is water-resistant once dry, making it the most popular paint for painting on canvas. We have hundreds of shades in stock, in tubes and large packs, from brands including Kompozit, KREUL Solo Goya, Schmincke, Golden, Maimeri, Pebeo, Royal Talens, and our own brand, ARTMiE.
How to Choose Acrylic Paint Based on Who’s Painting
Professionals and Advanced Painters
Professional acrylic paints contain more pigment and fewer fillers, so the paints are more vibrant, mix better, and are more lightfast. Find the full selection in our acrylic paints for artists category, including Schmincke PRIMAcryl and Schmincke AKADEMIE.
Students and Beginners
For learning and regular painting, you need reliable paint at a reasonable price. Our most popular choices are Kompozit ACRYL PRO ART 75 ml and Solo Goya Acrylic 100 ml. If you’re just starting out, a set of acrylic paints or a starter set for painters with paints, brushes, and canvases is the most practical choice.
Hobbies, Decorations, and Large Areas
Large packs are a good choice for underpainting, large formats, wood, and decorations: Solo Goya TRITON 750 ml, Kompozit STANDART 500 ml, or ArtCreation Essentials 750 ml. Find paints for wood, stone, and decorations in our hobby acrylic paints category.

What Acrylic Paints Are Used For
You can paint with acrylics on canvas, paper, cardboard, wood, stone, or ceramic (without firing). Use thick paint and texturing pastes to create relief and impasto, or thin the paint to create transparent glazes. Use acrylic mediums to change the gloss, fluidity, and drying time, such as pouring medium for fluid art or retarder for slower drying. Protect your finished painting with a varnish. Use fabric paints on T-shirts and sneakers, and glass paints on glasses and windows.
Synthetic brushes work well with acrylics. Choose from our painting brushes or go straight to our brush sets. Our article How to Paint with Acrylics: 14 Tips explains how to get started, step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions About Acrylic Paints
What are the best acrylic paints for beginners?
A set with basic shades is enough to get started, such as Kompozit ACRYL PRO 12 × 20 ml, along with a larger pack of white, which you’ll use the most. Once you know which paints you use, you can buy them in tubes.
What is the difference between student and professional acrylic paints?
Professional paints contain more pigment and fewer fillers, so they are more vivid, provide better coverage, and stay clean when mixed. Student paints cost less and are more than enough for learning, sketching, and hobbies.
How long do acrylic paints take to dry?
A thin layer is usually dry to the touch within 30 minutes. Thick layers and impasto can take several hours. Slow drying with a retarder or a water spray bottle, or speed it up with a hair dryer.
Can acrylic paints be thinned with water?
Yes, you can thin them with a small amount of water. If thinned too much, the paint loses its binder and coverage, so it’s better to use an acrylic medium for transparent glazes and fluid art.
Can you paint on wood with acrylic paints?
Yes, wood is a suitable surface for acrylics. Sand the surface, remove any dust, and apply a primer (gesso) if the wood is dark. Protect the finished painting with varnish. Find paints suitable for wood in the hobby acrylics category.
Should you varnish an acrylic painting?
It isn’t necessary, but varnish evens out the gloss, protects the surface from dust and UV radiation, and makes the painting easier to clean. Find gloss and matte varnishes in the varnishes and fixatives category.
