Air-dry modeling clay hardens in the air, usually within 24 hours per 1 cm of thickness, without firing in a kiln. Once dry, it can be sanded, painted with acrylic paints, and varnished. For everyday modeling, ARTMIE Clay with me, JOVI, or DAS is all you need; for delicate flowers and miniatures, choose lightweight Padico clays; for kids, try softer DARWI Kids or paper clay.
Air-Dry Modeling Clay has the properties of pottery clay but does not need a kiln: shape it, leave it to dry, and it’s ready. Below, you’ll find which clay is suitable for each project, how long it takes to dry, and how to finish your creation.
Which Air-Dry Clay Should You Choose?

| Fine details and impressions | fine-grained clay that does not shrink as it dries | DARWI white 500 g · DARWI terracotta 500 g |
| Larger surfaces without cracks | natural clay with cellulose fibers | Pebeo Gedeo 1.5 kg |

How Do You Work with Air-Dry Clay?
Knead the clay in your hands and model it on a work surface. Wrap any unused clay right away, as it starts to harden when exposed to air. Leave thicker pieces to dry longer: DARWI recommends about 24 hours per 1 cm of thickness, while JOVI and DAS take about 24 hours. Don’t speed up drying with heat, as this can cause the piece to crack. Once completely dry, you can sand the surface, paint it with acrylic paints, and apply varnish. Clay-based materials are not waterproof once dry, so use a glass insert in a vase. Padico Modena is the exception.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between air-dry clay and polymer clay?
Air-dry clay hardens in the air and is suitable for larger pieces, too. Polymer clay (FIMO, Cernit) hardens only when baked in an oven at 110–130 °C and is used for small jewelry pieces and figurines with fine details.
How long does air-dry clay take to dry?
About 24 hours at room temperature. For thicker shapes, allow 24 hours per centimeter of thickness (DARWI) or 24 to 48 hours (JOVI Patmaché). It’s best to leave thick pieces to dry longer.
Can air-dry clay be fired in a kiln?
It isn’t necessary, and most air-dry clays are not designed for it. If you want to make pottery in a kiln, use modeling clay designed for firing.
Is air-dry clay suitable for kids?
Yes. DARWI Kids has a softer formula for preschools and schools, Padico Karugaru is for kids ages 3 and up, and Padico Hearty clays meet ASTM D-4236 and EN 71 standards.
What can I use to paint air-dry clay pieces?
Once completely dry, paint them with acrylic paints. Padico Hearty can also be colored while still in the clay. Protect the surface with varnish. For DARWI concrete clay, the manufacturer recommends an impregnating varnish.
