Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between pan and tube watercolors?
Pans, such as those from Nevskaya Palitra, are ideal for travel and quick sketching because the paint is already dry. Tubes contain creamier paint that is easier to mix in larger quantities, which is useful when painting large areas on watercolor paper. The right choice depends on your working style and where you create.
Which brushes are best for oil painting?
For oil painting, you need firmer brushes that can handle the thick consistency of the paints. We recommend brushes with synthetic hair or natural bristles, such as those from Daler-Rowney. Synthetic bristles hold their shape and resist solvents, while natural bristles let you apply paint in thicker layers and create pronounced texture directly on the canvas.
How should I choose the right canvas?
Your canvas choice depends on the technique. For acrylics and oils, our ARTMiE® stretched canvases are ideal and already have a universal gesso primer. If you prefer detailed work, choose a canvas with a fine texture. For expressive painting with thick layers of paint, choose a canvas with a coarser grain, which holds the paint better and gives your work the depth it needs.
Why do acrylic paints dry too quickly on my canvas?
Acrylic dries very quickly, and that’s simply one of its properties. If you need more time to mix shades, blend a special slow-drying medium into the paint. We also recommend using a spray bottle filled with clean water to lightly moisten the paint on your palette. Quality ARTMiE® acrylic paints have a high pigment content, so they retain their saturation even when diluted with medium.
Are sketching pencils in different hardness grades really necessary?
Yes, absolutely. Hard pencils marked H are great for technical drawings and fine lines because they don’t smudge. Soft B pencils are essential for shading and achieving deep blacks. A set from Daler-Rowney gives you a wide range of hardness grades, helping your drawing achieve the contrast, depth, and professional look you need, which you can only achieve with the right combination of shades.
