Set of ARTMiE Butter 3D Paste and TRITON Acrylic Paints - Fluorescent Shades
Hobby acrylic paints are made for wood, stone, ceramic without firing, paper, and decorations. For wood and large surfaces, the best value comes from large packs of Kompozit STANDART 500 ml and Solo Goya TRITON 750 ml. For small decorations, choose small bottles from PENTART and KREUL. Sand wood before painting and protect the finished painting with varnish.
Acrylic Paints for Wood, Stone, and Decorations
Hobby acrylic paints are made for crafting at home, at school, and in clubs: painting wooden blanks, stones, flowerpots, frames, decorations, and doing art projects with kids. They are water-based, dry quickly, have no strong odor, and brushes wash clean with water. We have over 170 items in stock from Kompozit, KREUL, PENTART, Rosa, Nassau, Royal & Langnickel, and our own brand, ARTMiE.
Acrylic Paints for Wood
Wood is a good surface for acrylic paint. The process is simple:
- Preparation – Lightly sand the surface, then remove dust and old varnish.
- Base coat – Apply gesso or primer to dark or absorbent wood. The paints will cover better and look brighter.
- Painting – Paint in thin layers and let each one dry.
- Protection – Protect items that are used or kept outdoors with varnish.
For wood, furniture, and large surfaces, Kompozit STANDART 500 ml or Solo Goya TRITON 750 ml offers the best value. Find wooden blanks for painting in the wood category. For more tips, read our article on wood as a painting surface.
For Stones, Ceramic, and Other Surfaces
Use thicker acrylic paint on stones and acrylic markers for details. For ceramic and porcelain without firing, acrylic paint works well with varnish applied at the end. For dishes that will be washed, choose special porcelain paints. Use fabric paints on T-shirts and other textiles, and glass paints on glasses and windows.
Metallic and Effect Paints
Add a gold, silver, or copper sheen to decorations with metallic-effect acrylic paint or ARTMiE MIDAS Liquid Metallic Paste. Create reliefs and textures with pastes and gels.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hobby Acrylic Paint
What paint should I use on wood?
Acrylic paints are ideal for wooden decorations, frames, and blanks. They adhere well, dry quickly, and are water-resistant once dry. Apply varnish at the end on furniture and items subject to abrasion.
Should I prime wood before painting with acrylics?
It is not necessary, but a primer (gesso) reduces how absorbent the wood is, helps the paint cover better, and means you will use less paint. You can also paint directly on light-colored, smooth wood.
Will acrylic paint last outdoors?
Acrylic paint is water-resistant once dry, but it will last longer in rain, frost, and sunlight if you protect it with varnish suitable for outdoor use.
Are hobby acrylic paints suitable for kids?
Water-based acrylic paints are commonly used in schools and clubs. Younger kids should paint under adult supervision and wear clothes that can get dirty. Dried acrylic paint will not wash out of fabric.
What is the difference between hobby acrylic paint and artist acrylic paint?
Hobby acrylic paint is less expensive, made for decorations and crafting, and often comes in larger packs. Artist acrylic paint has more pigment and greater lightfastness, for paintings made to last for years.
