LUKAS: A Colorful Tradition from Düsseldorf Since 1862
The LUKAS brand was founded on October 18, 1862 in Düsseldorf, when Dr. Franz Schoenfeld began making watercolors and oil paints for artists at the famous Düsseldorf Academy. Around 1900, the brand adopted the name and logo of Saint Luke, the patron saint of painters.
The History of LUKAS
In 1964, LUKAS was among the first European manufacturers to bring acrylic paints to market (LUKAS Cryl). The brand is also associated with Vincent van Gogh, who is said to have used its oil paints. Since 2013, LUKAS has been part of the Daler-Rowney group.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between LUKAS Studio and LUKAS 1862 oil paints?
LUKAS 1862 is a professional line with a high pigment concentration and fine grinding, ensuring brilliance and lightfastness. LUKAS Studio is designed for students and experienced artists. It offers excellent value, using quality alternatives to more expensive pigments while retaining great mixing and application properties.
Are LUKAS Cryl acrylic paints suitable for painting large areas?
Yes, LUKAS Cryl Studio acrylic paints are ideal for large formats thanks to their high coverage and creamy consistency. They spread easily and form a durable, flexible film once dry. If you need to cover truly huge areas, these paints provide even coverage and rich shades that remain consistent even after the artwork has dried completely.
What can I use Nerchau fabric paints for?
Nerchau paints are a top choice for decorating fabric. They are highly pigmented, so they provide great coverage even on dark fabrics. Once applied and heat-set with an iron, they are wash-resistant. They are suitable for cotton, linen, and blends containing synthetic fibers. Use them to paint T-shirts, bags, or home textiles when you want lasting results and vivid colors.
Why choose LUKAS Aquarell 1862 watercolors?
These watercolors contain the highest-quality pigments with high lightfastness and purity. They are designed to be easily reactivated with water, even after drying on the palette. Their excellent solubility lets you create delicate transparent washes as well as intense areas of color. This is useful for detailed watercolor painting, where every brushstroke matters.
Are Daver products compatible with other LUKAS paints?
Yes, Daver complements the LUKAS range with practical tools and mediums. When working with LUKAS paints, you can confidently use Daver auxiliary products such as thinners, varnishes, and special mediums for adjusting viscosity. These products are designed to work together chemically without affecting the stability or colorfastness of your artwork.
