For illustration and design, reach for Copic Sketch or Chameleon alcohol markers; for canvas, metal and other surfaces, choose POSCA markers with pigment ink or Molotow and Kreul Triton acrylic markers. For fabric, porcelain, glass or chalkboards, pick markers made specifically for that surface, and for children, check the age given in the product description.
Markers and felt-tip pens – pens filled with ink or paint, with a tip you can draw, write and paint with. They differ in their fill (alcohol, acrylic, watercolor, fabric, chalk) and in their tip, so choose according to what you want to create and on which surface. You will find the full range in the Pastels and Markers category.

Professional markers for illustration: Copic and Chameleon
Dual-tip Copic Sketch markers use alcohol-based ink, and the manufacturer designs them for graphic artists, designers and illustrators. When a marker runs dry, top it up with Copic Ink 12 ml refill; you will find more refills in the Inks and Indian Inks category. Chameleon markers are alcohol-based, and the Color & Blending System sets add color tops for smooth gradients. Draw on paper that stops the ink from bleeding through, such as the Canson XL Marker pad with its bleed-proof barrier; you will find more in our sketchbooks.
Markers for painting on different surfaces: POSCA, Molotow, Triton
POSCA markers contain water-based pigment ink; shake the marker and pump the tip before use. Choose by tip size: PC-1MR (0.7 mm) for details, PC-3M (0.9 – 1.3 mm) for writing, and PC-7M (4.5 – 5.5 mm) up to PC-17K (15 mm) for large areas. The PC-7M description also mentions painting on walls. Molotow ONE4ALL 127HS acrylic markers have a replaceable 2 mm tip and can be refilled. Kreul Triton, with a 1 – 4 mm tip, combines with Solo Goya acrylic paints on canvas; replace a worn tip with spare tips.
Markers for fabric, porcelain and glass
For fabric, the color of the material is what matters: Javana Texi Max SUNNY are for light fabrics, while Kreul Opak also work on dark ones. Once a design made with Darwi markers is dry, iron it from the reverse side or through baking paper.
Darwi Armerina markers need no firing. The Nassau 24 pcs set is baked in the oven at 160 °C for 90 minutes. For writing with a brush tip, there is Kreul Easy. None of them is intended for surfaces that come into contact with food or drink.
Markers for drawing and coloring for kids
For the youngest, JOVI My First Jumbo (from 18 months) have a chunky body for a whole-hand grip. Giotto Turbo Dobble are for children aged 3 and up, and Bruynzeel 30 pcs for ages 4 and up. JOVI fine-tip markers wash out of fabric.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a marker and a felt-tip pen?
The two terms are often used interchangeably. What matters more is the pen’s fill – alcohol, acrylic, watercolor, fabric or chalk – and its tip. That tells you which surface and technique it suits.
Which markers are professional?
Manufacturers describe as professional, for example, the dual-tip Copic Sketch markers, Chameleon markers and the Ecoline Brush Pen watercolor pens from Royal Talens.
How do I fix a marker drawing on fabric?
With Darwi markers, iron the color once dry from the reverse side or through baking paper, setting the temperature to suit the fabric. Iron fabric decorated with the Giotto Decor marker and wash it at no more than 40 °C.
Can I use porcelain markers to decorate tableware for food?
No. Darwi Armerina, Nassau 24 pcs and Kreul Easy are, according to their descriptions, intended only for decorating surfaces that do not come into contact with food or drink.
What should I use to write on a chalkboard or window?
Chalk markers. POSCA PWE-8K is dust-free and wipes off with a damp cloth, while Edding 4085 is for temporary lettering on windows, glass, mirrors and dark chalkboards.
