Frequently Asked Questions About Modeling and Casting
What’s the difference between FIMO and Cernit?
Both are oven-bake polymer clays. FIMO Soft is softer and easier to work with, making it ideal for beginners. Cernit is slightly firmer but offers special effects, including pearl, translucent, and metallic finishes, which are popular with advanced jewelry makers.
Can you cast resin at home?
Yes, epoxy resin can easily be cast at home in silicone molds. Mix the two components in the exact ratio, add colorants or glitter, and pour the mixture into the mold. It hardens in 24–48 hours. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves.
What do I need to make soap?
To get started, you only need soap base (melt it in the microwave), a silicone mold, scented oil, and colorant. You’ll find everything in the soap making and candle making section. The whole process takes 30 minutes + setting time.
At what temperature do you fire polymer clay?
Fire FIMO at 110 °C and Cernit at 130 °C for 30 minutes. Use a kitchen thermometer. A temperature that is too high will cause the clay to darken, while a temperature that is too low will leave it insufficiently cured. Once cooled, the clay is firm and durable.
