Modeling clay is a general term for several materials: air-dry clay dries in the air, polymer clay (FIMO, Cernit) hardens when baked in an oven, plasticine never hardens, and pottery clay is fired in a kiln. Choose plasticine or soft clay that does not harden for kids, air-dry clay for decorations and bowls, and polymer clay for jewelry.
Modeling clay is not just one material. Choose one of the four types below based on what you want to make and whether you have an oven or kiln. We have all the clays in this category for kids and adults.

Frequently Asked Questions
What modeling clay is suitable for kids?
For the youngest kids, there’s JOVI My First modeling clay (from 12 months) or soft JOVI Soft Dough and GIOTTO be-bè (from 2 years). They don’t harden and can be reused. For creations a child will want to keep, air-dry clay is a good choice, such as DARWI Kids. According to the manufacturer, Cernit polymer clay is for kids ages 8 and up.
Which modeling clay does not need to be fired?
Air-dry modeling clay, such as ARTMIE Clay with me, JOVI, DAS, DARWI, Padico or Easy Dry. It air-dries on its own, usually within 24 hours. Natural clay, on the other hand, must be fired.
What is the difference between modeling clay and plasticine?
Plasticine never hardens, so it’s ideal for play and repeated crafting. Modeling clay (air-dry or polymer clay) hardens, leaving you with a lasting creation.
What do I need to get started?
Clay, a smooth work surface and basic modeling tools or a toothpick. To finish your creation, use acrylic paints and varnish. For polymer clay, you’ll also need an oven and parchment paper.
