About this category
In brief

Decoupage uses three-ply napkins, where you glue on only the top printed layer, and thin printed decoupage papers from Clairefontaine Decopatch, which conform to curved shapes thanks to their low weight (g/m²). We carry napkins from Nassau and ARTMiE. Choose glue based on the surface you’re decorating.

Decoupage napkins are thin and conform well to the shape of an object, so the motif looks painted on after varnishing. We explain how to use them in our article Napkin Decoupage: What It Is and How to Do It. Choose glue in the decoupage varnishes and glues category.

Napkin, rice paper, or decoupage paper?

  • Napkins – thin, with the motif blending into the surface; use only the top printed layer.
  • Rice paper – thin paper with visible fibers, popular for larger motifs; it’s applied with the same decoupage glue (Pentart Matte Glue 500 ml is specifically recommended for it by the manufacturer).
  • Decoupage papers – thin Decopatch printed papers with a low weight (g/m²) and smudge-resistant print; a 30 × 40 cm sheet covers more than a napkin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you prepare a napkin for decoupage?

Cut out or carefully tear out the motif (a torn edge blends into the surface better), then separate the unprinted bottom layers. Glue on only the thin top layer.

How do you keep a napkin from wrinkling?

Place the napkin on a thin layer of glue and brush more glue over it, working from the center toward the edges with a soft flat brush or foam brush. For larger areas, use decoupage paper. A Decopatch sheet measures 30 × 40 cm.

Can you use napkins on glass and fabric?

Yes, with the right glue. For glass and ceramic, use Pentart glue that is oven-baked; for fabric, use KREUL Textil Potch and iron to set it. We compare which glue to use on each surface in the decoupage varnishes and glues category.
