You can paint glass and porcelain at home without a kiln: degrease the glass with alcohol, draw the outlines with a liner, fill in the areas with paint, then let it dry or fire it in a regular oven, depending on the type of paint. Painted areas must not come into contact with food or drinks.
Painting on glass and porcelain is a technique that turns an ordinary glass, vase, or plate into an original piece. In this category, you’ll find glass and porcelain paints, liners, markers, and stencils.
How do you do it step by step?
- Wash the item and degrease it with alcohol. Handle it only by the edges.
- Sketch the motif with a marker, or place a reference image inside, behind the glass.
- Draw the outlines with a liner and let them dry.
- Fill in the areas with paint. For windows, use stained glass paint that doesn’t need baking; for glasses and porcelain, use paint that needs to be baked.
- Let bake-on paints dry, then bake them in a cold oven according to the instructions (KREUL 160 °C for 90 minutes, Pebeo Vitrea 160 160 °C for 40 minutes).
What will you need?
- glass paints or porcelain and ceramic paints
- a liner, such as Pebeo Cerne Relief or Pentart
- markers for glass and porcelain, such as KREUL Easy
- stencils for precise motifs
- alcohol for degreasing and fine brushes
Frequently asked questions
Can I drink from a painted glass?
No. All the manufacturers of glass and porcelain paints we sell state that painted areas must not come into direct contact with food or drinks. So paint the outside of the glass or mug, away from the rim that touches your mouth. After baking in the oven, the decoration can be washed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For KREUL, it can go in the dishwasher on a gentle cycle at 40 to 45 °C.
Which glass and porcelain paints are suitable for beginners?
KREUL glass and porcelain paint sets with a brush (6 × 20 ml): the paints are water-based, mistakes can be washed off with water before baking, and after baking at 160 °C they are dishwasher-safe. For windows, removable Window Art paints are the easiest option.
How long does baking in the oven take?
KREUL: 90 minutes at 160 °C; Pebeo Vitrea 160: 40 minutes at 160 °C; Pebeo Porcelaine 150: 35 minutes at 150 °C. Always put the item in a cold oven and let it cool inside.
Can you paint on glass with kids?
Yes, with Window Art paints, which peel off after drying and stick to the window; Pentart paints for kids; and JOVI Jovidecor Glass gel wax crayons, which wipe off with a cloth.
