Frequently Asked Questions
What paper is best for watercolor painting?
For watercolor, you need paper with a higher weight, ideally 300 g/m² or more, so it doesn’t buckle when wet. We recommend cold-pressed paper, which has a subtle texture and holds pigment well. Our selection includes quality Phoenix watercolor pads, an ideal choice for beginners and more advanced artists who want professional results.
How is sketching paper different from drawing paper?
Sketching paper is thinner, has a lower weight, and is intended for quick pencil or charcoal sketches. Drawing paper is sturdier, more resistant to erasing, and has a smoother surface. For quality, choose Phoenix pads, which can handle layers of pencil or pastel without the paper starting to crumble or become damaged.
What paper should I use for alcohol markers?
Alcohol markers require special paper with a smooth surface that prevents ink from bleeding beyond the lines. This paper is nonporous, so the color won’t seep through to the other side. Our ARTMiE® pads are designed to keep your illustrations looking clean and professional and to help you create smooth gradients between shades without wasting ink.
Why does my paper buckle when I paint with acrylics?
Paper buckles if it has a low weight and isn’t intended for wet techniques. Acrylic paints contain water, which saturates the paper. When painting with acrylics, use paper with a weight of at least 300 g/m² or special Phoenix paper for acrylics. It has a surface treatment that resists moisture and helps your work stay flat and firm once dry.
What is paper with a high weight of over 400 g/m² used for?
High-weight paper is especially sturdy and almost resembles cardboard. It’s ideal for techniques that use a lot of water or thick layers of paint, such as watercolor, gouache, or acrylic. Its thickness keeps it from buckling and lets you work with techniques that require a durable surface, which comes in handy when creating detailed paintings or mixed-media work.
