About this category
In brief

Polymer clay is shaped like modeling clay and hardens only when baked in a regular oven: FIMO at 110 °C for 30 minutes, Cernit at 110 to 130 °C for a maximum of 30 minutes. It is suitable for jewelry, figurines, and small decorations. To get started, all you need is FIMO Soft or Cernit Number One. FIMO Effect, Cernit Translucent, or Metallic add special effects.

Polymer clay, often simply called FIMO, is a PVC-based clay that holds its shape and becomes hard and durable after baking. The colors can be mixed together, and the finished piece can be sanded, varnished, or painted.

Instructions from conditioning the clay to baking it are in the article Polymer Clay: What It Is, FIMO or Cernit, and How to Bake It. If you don't want to bake, see air-dry clay; compare all types on the modeling page.

How Do You Bake Polymer Clay?

Knead the clay in your hands before modeling to soften it; if it gets too soft, put it in the refrigerator for a while. Place the finished piece on parchment paper or a tile and bake according to the packaging: FIMO for 30 minutes at 110 °C, Cernit for 20 to 30 minutes at 110 to 130 °C. Do not exceed the temperature. Once cooled, you can sand the piece, paint it with acrylic paints, and varnish it. The finished pieces are not intended for direct contact with food.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Difference Between FIMO and Cernit?

FIMO Soft (Staedtler) is a soft clay sold in 57 g blocks divided into 8 sections. It bakes at 110 °C for 30 minutes and is compatible with the FIMO Effect, Leather-effect, and Professional lines. Cernit Number One is an opaque clay that is firm once cooled. It bakes at 110–130 °C for a maximum of 30 minutes; Cernit Doll is designed for dolls. The two brands can be mixed within each brand's own range.

Is Polymer Clay Suitable for Kids?

The Cernit manufacturer recommends its clay for kids ages 8 and up, with an adult present during baking. For younger kids, air-dry clay or modeling dough is a better choice.

Can Polymer Clay Be Hardened Without an Oven?

No, polymer clay needs heat from an oven. It stays soft if not baked. An oven-free alternative is air-dry clay, such as Padico Modena, which is waterproof once dry.

What Should I Use to Varnish Polymer Clay Pieces?

Use varnishes made for polymer clay, such as Cernit gloss or matte varnish, once the piece has cooled completely. Cernit liquid gel is used to join pieces and transfer images.
