Frequently Asked Questions

What paints are best for painting polystyrene?

Use only water-based acrylic paints on polystyrene, such as paints from PENTART or ARTMiE®. Avoid sprays and paints containing thinners, as they may immediately etch and damage the polystyrene surface. Acrylic paints provide good coverage, dry quickly, and create a durable layer on polystyrene that you can also varnish afterward.

What can I use to glue polystyrene blanks without dissolving them?

When gluing polystyrene, you need special solvent-free glues. A polystyrene glue or a universal dispersion glue such as Duvilax is ideal. Never use a high-temperature hot glue gun, as it will melt the material’s structure. For a strong bond, choose PENTART glues, which are made for creative projects and safely bond polystyrene shapes to other decorations.

What’s the best way to prepare the polystyrene surface before decorating?

For a smooth finish, you can lightly sand the polystyrene with fine-grit sandpaper. For a better result, apply a base coat of acrylic paint or gesso from Sonnet. Gesso fills small gaps in the polystyrene’s structure, creating an even base that makes paint easier to apply and gives it a more professional, uniform appearance.

Can polystyrene decorations be embellished using decoupage?

Yes, decoupage is ideal for polystyrene. First, apply white acrylic paint to the polystyrene so it shows through the napkin. Then use PENTART decoupage glue. Carefully position the napkin and smooth it with a brush from the center outward to prevent bubbles. Finally, coat the entire surface with decoupage varnish to seal the motif and make it more durable.

How do you cut polystyrene shapes properly so they don’t crumble?

An electric hot-wire polystyrene cutter is best for cutting polystyrene. It seals the material and prevents crumbling. If you don’t have one, use a very sharp utility knife and cut slowly with smooth strokes. When using a regular knife, avoid sawing, as it creates unwanted little balls of debris. For precise shapes, we recommend our ARTMiE® blanks, which are already precisely pre-cut.
