For technical lettering, choose a stencil whose character height matches the nib of your technical pen – 5 mm lettering is drawn with a 0.5 mm pen. For technical drawing at school, go for a set square with a perpendicular line or the Spoko set, and for your pencil case, a 15 cm ruler. Choose other technical drawing templates by shape: circles, ellipses or architectural symbols.
Technical rulers and templates – tools for technical drawing, precise measuring and technical lettering. Rulers, set squares and protractors guide your line and measure angles, while templates give you a ready-made shape – lettering stencils, circles, ellipses or furniture symbols.

How to choose a technical drawing ruler and set square
For school geometry, all you need is the Spoko set: four polystyrene rulers in yellow, blue, orange and turquoise, in a pack with a euro hang tab. If you want a single tool for drawing perpendicular and parallel lines, choose the KOH-I-NOOR 45/177 set square with perpendicular line and grip ridge – it is transparent, so you can see the surface underneath. The smaller 45/141 set square is just as transparent.
Every pencil case needs a 15 cm ruler. The Faber-Castell Sparkle and Dots rulers come in 15 or 30 cm lengths, are flexible and have two scales – for right- and left-handers – plus a name window. Their edges don’t smudge and they are made from 100% recycled plastic.
For scale drawings, use LENIAR scale rulers with 6 or 10 ratios, and for long lines, aluminum rulers up to 150 cm. You’ll find a work surface for larger formats in our drawing boards category.
Technical lettering stencils: lettering height and pen nib
KOH-I-NOOR technical lettering stencils are made of transparent brown plastic (Styrolux) and have cut-out upper- and lower-case letters, numerals and mathematical symbols, most of them with accented characters too. For each lettering height, the manufacturer gives a recommended pen nib:
- 2.5 mm – 0.25 mm nib, small text in drawings and diagrams
- 3.5 mm – 0.35 mm nib (works with 0.25–0.5 mm)
- 5 mm and 7 mm – 0.5 and 0.7 mm nibs, also available in a school version
- 10 mm and 14 mm – 1.0 and 1.4 mm nibs for headings
- 20 mm – 2.0 mm nib for large-format lettering, such as information boards
With the recommended nib, the stencil guides your pen precisely and the ink won’t bleed outside the stencil. You’ll find pens with precise nib widths in our technical pens and pencils category, with more tools under technical drawing and school supplies.
Frequently asked questions
What is technical lettering?
A standardized lettering style for technical drawings, defined by the ISO standard. A stencil is the tool that lets you write it with a technical pen so that every character has the same height and shape.
Which lettering stencil do I need for a 0.5 mm pen?
A stencil with a 5 mm lettering height. A 0.35 mm pen goes with a 3.5 mm stencil, and a 0.7 mm pen with a 7 mm stencil.
What kinds of technical drawing templates are there?
Besides lettering stencils, there are circle templates, ellipse templates, isometric ellipse templates, geometric shape templates (hexagons, circles, squares, triangles) and architectural templates with furniture symbols at 1 : 50 or 1 : 100 scale.
Which ruler is suitable for left-handers?
Faber-Castell Sparkle and Dots rulers have two scales, one for right-handers and one for left-handers.
