How to Get Started Painting on Fabric
- Choose your fabric – a cotton T-shirt, bag, or pillowcase. Light-colored, unprinted fabric is ideal
- Choose your paints – fabric paints are specially formulated to remain flexible and withstand washing
- Paint or use a stencil – place cardboard under the fabric to prevent paint from bleeding through, then create whatever you like
- Set the paint with an iron – once dry, iron the reverse side for 3–5 minutes. The paint will become permanent and washable

Frequently Asked Questions About Textiles and Handicrafts
Are fabric paints washable?
Yes, after proper heat-setting (iron on the reverse side at 150 °C for 3–5 minutes), fabric paints can withstand washing at 40 °C. We recommend washing inside out without bleach.
What is the difference between fabric paints and silk paints?
Fabric paints are opaque and designed for cotton and synthetics. Silk paints are transparent, flow into the fibers, and create a watercolor effect. Always use an outline (gutta) on silk to prevent the paints from spreading.
What do I need to make jewelry?
To get started, all you need is your choice of beads, basic components (a clasp, rings, thread), flat-nose pliers, and round-nose pliers. You can find everything in the jewelry making section.
Can I paint on dark fabric?
Yes, use special opaque fabric paints. Regular transparent paints won't show up on a dark surface. Opaque paints have higher pigmentation and are visible even on a black T-shirt.
