Since ancient times, artists have relied on pigments mined from the Earth. Today, we are returning to this practice. Finding these minerals involves traveling to remote locations, identifying high-quality ore veins and then sourcing the minerals from local miners. The raw minerals are then processed to reveal their color within. Our chemist and manufacturers mix this pigment with the perfect ratio of medium, then grind it again to bring out the natural beauty of each shade. Through careful selection and a meticulous processing method, we bring you the best: paints of truly professional quality and consistency.

Daniel Smith will always be my number one when it comes to watercolor. The pigments in these watercolors are unique. The wide range of more than 260 colors means I’m always discovering new shades. What makes the Daniel Smith color range special is that it includes colors you simply can’t find from another brand, beautiful shades like Moonglow, Lunar Blue, and Sleeping Beauty. The intense pigmentation means you really only need a small amount of paint, which explains the price. If you’re looking for the highest-quality professional watercolors, choose Daniel Smith!
PB16 is a beautiful blue-green shade and an underrated pigment in the phthalo family. You can mix it from PB15:3 and PG7, but I’ve come to love this turquoise color as a single-pigment option. It’s incredibly versatile. With yellows, it makes vivid, clean greens; with reds, it makes moody purples. And because it’s a phthalo pigment, it’s reliable and economical. A small amount of paint goes a long way. Daniel Smith’s version of this color is my favorite of all the brands I’ve tried. It has a softer, more subdued character once it dries on paper.
I have several tubes of Daniel Smith watercolor paint and absolutely love them, especially the quinacridone shades, which are wonderfully rich. Quinacridone Fuchsia is a single-pigment cool red, a little bluer than quinacridone rose, but not as blue as quinacridone magenta. At full strength, it’s a strong, deep pink-red. Thin layers flow beautifully, making it an ideal color for painting flowers. It’s great to find such an exceptional range.
Almost a textbook ‘primary’ yellow. It makes beautiful, fresh greens, which is great for me because transparent light tones are otherwise hard to achieve. I have a warmer yellow in my palette for mixing, so this works great alongside it. It creates smooth, clean glazes.
I bought this to mix gouache with watercolor and create a hybrid. Wow, it’s so good! I had another brand, but this DS is excellent quality, as always. I use it straight from the tube, but I’m planning to put some in a half pan too. Daniel Smith is simply genius.
