Q: How do I thin oil paints?

Oil mediums or thinners, such as turpentine, are used for thinning. The less you thin the paint, the thicker and more textured the brushstroke will be.

How to Use

Four Steps for working with oil paints.

Oil painting takes patience, not experience. All you need is a palette, brushes, and an El Greco paint set with a high pigment concentration.

Prepare Your Palette

Squeeze the paints onto a palette. You can paint straight from the tube or thin them with a medium or thinner. The less you thin them, the thicker the brushstroke will be.

Apply Layers

Build up the paint in layers. The classic, creamy formula adheres well to canvas, wood, and canvas board.

Mix Paints

The optimal consistency makes it easy to mix shades directly on the canvas and create smooth tonal transitions.

Let Dry

Oil paints dry slowly, giving you time to work on the details. Once dry, the paint retains its high lightfastness.

“I was looking for something very specific: a practical tube for carrying pre-prepared flip chart paper. I ordered one tube from Alza and it was useless. Narrow and inflexible. The one from Artmie is perfect.”

“A wide selection and reliable service, but product descriptions are not always complete. For example, it would be useful to list the pigments used in professional watercolors.”

“The store is easy to navigate, and the products are logically organized, so I didn’t have to search for long. The search function also worked great, which I appreciate. I ordered on Thursday, and the goods were already in the Z-Box on Monday.”
