Excellent product, very dark black with a semi-matte/satin finish. It works well on different surfaces, but best on less absorbent grounds, such as gesso-primed canvas or sized paper, where it keeps its deep black matte finish. I tried different surfaces and nibs, and the results aren’t always the same, so I recommend testing it first. The ink also works in pens from other leading brands. In my opinion, Signal Black is a high-quality, richly pigmented ink that can be diluted, but works best undiluted for drawing. Remember to shake it, as the contents settle. If it looks thin and gray, just shake it well. It’s my go-to black ink for large-format linocut drawings.
I highly recommend it for mixed media. The color and application are consistent, it’s economical, and lightfastness isn’t a problem. It’s a great combination for landscapes with Shock Blue Middle and this Vanilla Pastel shade. It’s a reliable favorite for me, and I’m someone who prefers watercolors.
I bought several of these and they’re excellent. They flow well, and the muted colors go nicely with more vivid colors from other brands.
