This set offers a useful and interesting selection of colors in a classic metal tin with a retro feel. A note about lightfastness, which isn’t listed in the product information tab: The Alizarin Crimson in this set is PR83:1, rated 1 star for lightfastness (so it isn’t lightfast). That’s not a problem if you mainly work in sketchbooks and plan to scan or photograph your work instead of hanging it on the wall. It’s definitely a beautiful color to play with. As a longtime Schmincke fan, I like the retro style of the tin. It’s nice that there’s room to add more colors. The color selection is useful and interesting. The set offers old-fashioned alternatives (Viridian instead of Phthalo Green, Prussian Blue instead of Phthalo Blue). Transparent Sienna (PR101) is exceptionally beautiful. Overall, I recommend it, not necessarily as a first set, but as a solid starter set for anyone who wants to explore old color-mixing techniques.
This is a great little travel palette, compact but able to hold a lot of paint. If you remove both rails that hold two rows of half pans, there’s room for another row. I currently have 2 full pans and 9 half pans in it. The mixing area with two enamel wells is adequate. As for the included colors, they’re all useful and high quality, but keep in mind this is a special retro edition, so it’s not exactly what you’d choose for a travel set. Yellow Ochre and Sumy Dark are too similar to deserve a place in an 8-color set, and there’s only one blue. Even so, all the colors are worth having, and it’s easy to swap out or add more pans.
This Cubist edition has an awesome color selection for creating really bold work.
As an art teacher, I bought this for my students at school, and we’re all thrilled with how beautifully the shades work together.
