This is a review of the entire Schmincke Horadam watercolor range. I’m slowly building my collection because these paints can go from a delicate wash to a bold, vibrant color with a single brushstroke. I know the characteristics of watercolor paints from different brands well, and I can confidently say Schmincke Horadam is a brand that meets all my requirements in one range.
I watched an interview with Gris and took a screenshot of his palette. I was drawn to four vibrant colors: lemon yellow, warm red, blue, and green. Based on Schmincke’s charts, I think May green is the right one! This color lifts well and is great for washes. It re-wets easily and mixes well with other yellows. Schmincke Ultramarine Violet works well as a complementary color.
Schmincke is a classic. The colors spread beautifully, and the pigmentation is top-notch.
I finally invested in proper watercolors, and the difference compared with cheap sets is huge.
