This is a great little travel palette, compact but with room for lots of paint. If you remove the two channels that hold two rows of half pans, you can fit in another row. I currently have 2 full pans and 9 half pans in it. The mixing area with two enamel wells is enough. I know some people prefer palettes with mixing areas on both sides of the paints, but those take up a lot of space and can be hard to handle when painting outdoors. As for the included paints, they’re all useful and good quality, but keep in mind that this is a special retro edition, so they’re not exactly what you’d choose for a travel set. Yellow ochre and raw umber are too similar to both deserve a place in an 8-color travel set, and there’s only one blue. Still, all 8 colors are worth having, and the pans are easy to swap out or add.
When I started painting with Horadam gouache, I finally realized the problem wasn’t me, it was the materials I was using. The colors are bright and vivid, and mixing is easy and natural. No brush marks after it dries. One drop of water brings dried paint back to life as if you’d just squeezed it out of the tube. Fixes are a breeze. It’s really worth the price!
The black gouache is incredibly opaque, exactly what I was looking for for my graphic designs.
I bought this tube to refill my palette, and I love the matte finish it leaves when dry.
I use these paints when teaching elementary school because the students can work with them very cleanly and effectively. The quality is excellent.
