I started learning to paint with oils in an adult art class. Most classes don't allow Liquin or solvents on the premises because of the smell or health risks. I love how these paints help my work dry quickly, so I can keep up with the teacher and finish my homework before the next class. In my busy life, waiting for paint to dry is a HUGE problem. They also help me make the switch from acrylics to oil painting. I didn't like the smell, drying properties, or workability of water-mixable oil paints. Thank you, I really appreciate it!
I've only been painting with oils for a few months, but I quickly came to love alkyd paints. These are perfect, affordable and with good pigment. This Winsor Yellow is a transparent yellow, and there aren't many of those. It leans a little green, but not too much. I've used it to mix great greens, for highlights, and especially for glazing.
I'm a very busy professional artist, and I use Griffin Alkyds because they let me work faster and build up layers thanks to their quick drying time, while retaining the flow and pigment of traditional oil paints. I wouldn't use anything else.
Burnt Umber is my go-to color for shadows in my portraits. Adding this alkyd paint along with white to my usual oil palette helps speed up drying. It's also a quality paint.
I like using a few alkyd paints, and I've used Griffin Titanium White in all my work, but I used too much of it when mixing. This paint is a nice alternative. It isn't as dominant. It mixes well and is excellent for subtle highlights. At the price of Flake/Lead White, it's a good substitute for anyone on a budget.
