How to Paint a Landscape on Canvas

What Do You Need to Paint a Landscape?

First, let's get the basic supplies ready, starting with a canvas. ARTMiE canvases are gesso-primed in advance, so they're ready to paint on. Artist Evka chose a 30x30 cm size. For a canvas this size, it's best to have at least two brushes on hand: one flat brush, size 10, and one round brush, size 8. If you also have a hobby gesso priming brush in your creative corner, it will make painting the background easier. A fan brush will also come in handy for painting tufts of grass and more.

If you'd like to try different techniques, choose a painting palette knife too. A classic shape will do.

The artist loves using them and recommends size 13. The last, but most important, supplies for painting are acrylic paints. They're among artists' favorites and are suitable for beginners and advanced artists.

Evka works with a handy acrylic paint set by Solo Goya, which she used to create a truly masterful work of art. It's not essential, but you might like to rest your canvas on an easel.

There are also smaller versions that you can conveniently set on a table and fold up after painting so they take up as little space as possible in your studio.

What shades of paint do you need to paint a landscape?

Evka Sugar says you’ll need two 20 ml tubes in the white shade. White always runs out the fastest, so you can also get a larger individual pack of acrylic paint in this shade. More advanced artists mix their own paints, but this set is ready for your brush, so there’s no need to create new shades. Choose these tubes from the set too: pink (yes, we’ll be working some magic with pink paint too), light blue, leaf green, yellow-green, Indian blue, and cobalt blue. And we’re ready to start.

How to paint a landscape step by step

When you pick up a brush, it’s important to follow the rule “from large areas to details.” So first, we’ll paint the background. You can divide the painting into several sections that will connect with one another later. Work from the darkest shades, layering lighter ones over them. In the final step, it’s important to paint the details using a smaller brush or the fan brush mentioned earlier. See how it’s done:
