Ghiant Final Varnish Spray for Photographs 400 ml
Varnish protects a finished painting from dust, moisture, and UV radiation, and evens out the sheen. For acrylic paintings, use acrylic varnish, in gloss, satin, or matte, in liquid form or as a spray. For pastels and drawings, use a fixative, such as ARTMiE Lumina. Varnish only when the painting is completely dry.
Varnishes and Fixatives for Paintings
In this category, you’ll find final varnishes for acrylic and oil paintings, spray varnishes, fixatives for pastels, charcoal, and pencil, protective glazes, and varnishes for decorations. Brands: Schmincke, PENTART, Kompozit, KREUL Solo Goya, Pebeo, Ghiant, and ARTMiE.
Which Varnish to Use for an Acrylic Painting
Liquid Acrylic Varnish
Apply a thin coat with a wide, soft brush. Popular options include Kompozit Gloss Acrylic Varnish, its satin version, and PENTART Gloss Final Varnish. KREUL Gloss Varnish is suitable for both acrylic and oil paints.
Spray Varnish
Spray creates an even coat without brush marks, making it suitable for large paintings and textured surfaces. Choose, for example, KREUL Satin Acrylic Spray Varnish, Solo Goya Matte Varnish 400 ml, or the affordable FLY COLOR Varnish 400 ml.
Gloss, Satin, or Matte?
Gloss varnish deepens and brightens colors, while matte varnish reduces reflections and suits subtle tones and large paintings displayed in bright light. Satin is a compromise. Use one type of varnish on each painting.
Fixative for Pastels, Charcoal, and Drawings
Fixative sets pastel and charcoal dust so the drawing won’t smudge. Our best-selling option is ARTMiE Lumina Spray Fixative 400 ml. Spray from a distance of about 30 cm in several thin coats.
Frequently Asked Questions About Varnishes for Paintings
When can I varnish an acrylic painting?
When it is completely dry, including thick layers. Thin paintings can be varnished after a few days; for modeling paste and impasto, it’s best to wait two to three weeks.
Do I have to varnish an acrylic painting?
It isn’t required, but varnish protects the painting, evens out the sheen, and makes it easier to clean. We especially recommend it for paintings for sale and for paintings displayed in the kitchen or hallway.
How can I apply varnish without bubbles or streaks?
Don’t mix varnish by shaking it. Apply a thin coat in one direction with a soft flat brush. Apply the second coat crosswise only after the first has dried. Varnish in a dust-free environment.
Can varnish also be used on decorations and wood?
Yes, acrylic varnishes also protect paintings on wood, stone, or paper. Apply several coats to items exposed to abrasion.
