SCHMINCKE – German precision in artist paints since 1881
The Schmincke brand was founded in 1881 by two paint chemists, Hermann Schmincke and Josef Horadam, in Erkrath near Düsseldorf. Inspired by an old masters’ recipe for resin-oil paints that they discovered in Florence, they created their first paint line, MUSSINI.
History of the Schmincke brand
In 1892, after 11 years of research, Josef Horadam developed HORADAM watercolors, now considered among the best watercolors in the world, with more than 140 shades. Both legendary lines, MUSSINI and HORADAM, are still made in the same town of Erkrath, more than 140 years later.
