For decoupage, you need a napkin or decoupage paper, glue and decoupage varnish (often combined in one 2-in-1 product), a flat brush, and a surface such as wood, glass, ceramic, metal, or fabric. Use only the top printed layer of a three-ply napkin, brush glue over it from the center outward, and varnish it once dry. For glass and ceramic, use glue that is oven-cured; for fabric, use glue that is heat-set with an iron.
Decoupage (napkin decoupage) is the process of transferring a motif from a napkin or paper onto an object so that it looks painted. Find step-by-step instructions in the article Napkin Decoupage: What Is Decoupage and How Do You Do It?; here’s an overview of what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which glue should I use for decoupage?
It depends on the surface: for wood, paper, and metal, use 2-in-1 glue and varnish (Pentart, Kompozit, KREUL Art Potch); for glass and ceramic, use Pentart glue for ceramic and bake it in the oven; for fabric, use KREUL Textil Potch. You can compare products by surface in the varnishes and glues for decoupage category.
Can I use regular glue for decoupage?
Decoupage glue is thin, so you can brush it over the paper and it also protects the paper like varnish. Thick glue would wrinkle the napkin and leave the surface unprotected.
What surfaces can I use for decoupage?
Wood, cardboard, metal, glass, ceramic, plastic, and fabric. Use a suitable glue for each surface: one that is baked on for glass and ceramic, and one that is ironed on for fabric. Kompozit glue is not suitable for Teflon or polyethylene.
How do I decoupage fabric?
First, rinse the fabric to remove any chemicals left from manufacturing, then let it dry. Apply KREUL Textil Potch glue to the area, place the napkin on top, and smooth it with a brush. It takes about 24 hours to dry. Then iron the fabric on the reverse side or through a sheet of paper.
How can I get a cracked, aged look?
Use Pentart two-step crackle varnish: apply the first step, then apply the second after it dries. The second step cracks as it dries. Highlight the cracks with liquid patina or antiquing paste. Metallic wax paste is not suitable for filling cracks. The second step is not water-resistant once dry, so apply a thinner-soluble varnish to the item the next day. The manufacturer recommends Pentart matte clear varnish as a topcoat for crackle varnish.
